I'm so excited for this interview series! Loved all the detail about Bryan Washington's writing routine, and how he restricts how much he reads during the generative process…very interesting!
Also—Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto is one of my absolute favorite novels (I'm constantly recommending it to others!!) so it was great to hear what Washington loves about it. It's an amazing story of a young woman moving through grief and towards a life that makes her feel fulfilled. There's also a trans character in it who's very compassionately and thoughtfully written, which feels very radical for its time (originally published in 1988!)
This series is incredible! I’d love a follow up once the book is published, like a post process debrief? (I’m also nosy and want to learn more about Bryan splitting time in Japan because I feel like he’s low-key living a dream life I never dared dream of because it seemed not possible).
The Membranes is one of my favorite novels of all time so I love to see it mentioned. Written the year I was born in 1996 and is still so deeply poignant and way ahead of it’s time. Will be checking out many of Bryan’s recommendations because the taste is giving!
I loved this Tembe! Super interesting, great questions and even greater book recs from Bryan! I have just started reading ‘Bellies’ so I loved to see it mentioned in such high praise! Excited for the rest of this series xox
Bryan Washington is a favorite writer for me, so thank you for this wonderful interview! Looking to read Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto for the first time and excited (avid reader here).
